FLORIDA MAN BANNED FROM ZOO AFTER 40TH ATTEMPT TO BUY A CAPYBARA IN CASH

FLORIDA MAN BANNED FROM ZOO AFTER 40TH ATTEMPT TO BUY A CAPYBARA IN CASH TAMPA, Florida — A Florida man has officially been banned for life from a local zoo after staff say he made his 40th attempt to purchase the facility's most popular capybara using nothing but cash, handwritten contracts, and what police described as "an alarming amount of confidence." According to investigators, 57-year-old Randy Collins first approached zoo employees nearly two years ago after becoming convinced the capybara "looked lonely" and would enjoy living in his backyard beside his koi pond. When staff explained the animal wasn't for sale, Collins allegedly returned the following weekend carrying an envelope stuffed with $4,200 in cash. That was only the beginning. Zoo records reportedly show Collins visited the attraction 40 separate times, each visit increasing his offer while insisting, "Everything has a price." Employees say he eventually began bringing snacks for the animal, greeting it by name, and introducing himself as its "future roommate." On one occasion, he allegedly showed staff blueprints for a custom-built "capybara spa" complete with heated pools, shaded hammocks and a misting system. Security footage reportedly captured him attempting to measure the animal with a tape measure "to make sure it'd fit comfortably in his SUV." The final straw came when Collins arrived wearing a polo shirt reading "Capybara Relocation Specialist" and handed the zoo director a cashier's check for $25,000 along with transfer paperwork he'd designed himself. Police say Collins became argumentative after being refused once again, insisting the capybara had "made prolonged eye contact," which he interpreted as acceptance of the offer. Officers escorted him from the property and issued a trespass warning. As deputies led him away, Collins reportedly turned toward the capybara enclosure one last time and shouted, "I'll wait for your counteroffer!" The zoo has since joked they'll be adding his photo to the entrance under a new sign reading: "Capybaras Are Not For Sale."
