HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA — Lifeguard Tyler Hawkins, 26, has been suspended without pay after swimming 80 yards into a rip current to save a dog that had been pulled out to sea while its owner screamed helplessly from the sand. Hawkins reached the golden retriever, named Biscuit, just before a second wave dragged it under and hauled it back by its collar The city flagged it because department policy lists animals as "non-priority rescue subjects" He left his tower unmanned for roughly 4 minutes, which a supervisor called "abandonment of post" His suspension notice cited "deployment of public resources for a non-human subject" and "unauthorized water entry" A manager reportedly told him the rescue "exposed the city to liability" and "is not what taxpayers fund this tower for" The crowd on the beach cheered so loudly when he carried the dog ashore that a nearby vendor stopped selling and just clapped.
