TOURIST ARRESTED AFTER TRYING TO PAY A TAXI WITH COINS FROM SEVEN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES Brent Calloway handed his taxi driver a fistful of foreign coins, then asked for change from a $46 fare. His calculation was based entirely on how heavy the money felt. The tourist from Dayton, Ohio, had just reached his Miami hotel when he emptied a souvenir pouch onto the front seat. Out came euros, pesos, Canadian quarters and enough other currency to give the cupholder a passport. The driver asked for dollars. Brent pointed at a coin with a large 10 on it. "There's ten right there. You're making this complicated." When that argument failed, Brent started adding the printed numbers together on his phone. He reached 312 and announced that the driver actually owed HIM money. "It adds up in spirit," he explained, sliding a small stack forward as a tip. The driver offered to take a card. Brent had one. He just didn't want to use it because he'd promised his wife he would "get rid of all this change on the trip." Instead of paying, he got out, took his suitcase and told the hotel doorman that the taxi was refusing international business. Then he climbed back into the rear seat to prevent the driver from accepting another fare until somebody respected his exchange rate. The argument ended with Brent being arrested and his wife coming downstairs to settle the fare using the card he'd refused to touch. She also collected every coin from the seat. Brent immediately asked whether she'd remembered the tip. "Yes," she said. "I gave him real money for having to meet you."
