ROCHESTER, NY — Pediatric nurse Kayla Brennan, 34, has been suspended without pay after staying eleven hours past her shift to sit with a frightened child whose parents were stranded by a storm 90 miles away. Brennan stayed from 9 p.m. until 8 a.m., reading the same picture book six times so the boy would not be alone The hospital flagged it because she "remained on the unit without an approved overtime authorization" She bought him a $3 cherry popsicle and a $7 stuffed bear from the lobby vending area, logged as "unbilled comfort items" Her suspension notice cited "exceeding scheduled hours" and "informal guardianship outside scope of duties" A manager reportedly told her the act "created liability" and "is not a service the unit is staffed to provide" When his parents finally arrived, the boy was asleep on her arm, and his mother had to step into the hall to compose herself.
