Woman, 89, Arrested for Replacing the Town Noticeboard Flyers With Her Own Opinions

Woman, 89, Arrested for Replacing the Town Noticeboard Flyers With Her Own Opinions GAINESVILLE, FL — An 89-year-old Florida woman was arrested Tuesday after police say she spent nearly eight months quietly replacing every official flyer on the town's community noticeboard with handwritten opinions she believed were "far more useful than announcements." According to investigators, Martha Ellison, 89, removed advertisements for yard sales, church dinners, missing pets, and city meetings before replacing them with laminated signs reading, "Gary Should Stop Wearing Cargo Shorts," "The Library Needs Better Chairs," "People Who Don't Return Shopping Carts Should Lose Dessert Privileges," and "Blueberries Have Been Overrated Since 1998." Residents reportedly assumed the notices were official because they were neatly organized, color-coded, and always signed simply, "Management." Police say attendance at one city council meeting nearly quadrupled after Martha posted a flyer claiming, "Tonight's meeting includes free pie and complaints about loud leaf blowers." There was no pie, but there were plenty of complaints. Officers later searched Martha's home and allegedly discovered more than 600 professionally laminated opinion posters sorted into categories labeled Neighborhood Problems, Grocery Store Etiquette, Television Shows That Went On Too Long, and Things That Irritate Martha. When asked why she did it, Martha reportedly shrugged and replied, "People ignore real announcements. Opinions get results." She was arrested while attempting to replace a missing dog poster with one that read, "If your dog keeps escaping, perhaps ask him why."
