Agents say Hastings had lit the candles at a nearby coffee shop specifically to "surprise" her seatmate, not realizing open flame of any kind is strictly prohibited past the checkpoint. Hastings allegedly argued the candles were "basically decorative" and posed no real fire risk TSA staff say a fire extinguisher was retrieved as a precaution before the candles were manually snuffed out Witnesses say the cake itself passed screening without issue once the candles were removed She reportedly missed her original boarding window entirely due to the extended checkpoint delay Gate agents say she was rebooked on a later flight after agreeing to travel candle-free Fellow travelers described the sight as "genuinely alarming" until it became clear it was just a cake. "In 14 years working checkpoint security, I've never had to extinguish a birthday cake," said TSA supervisor Renata Ibarra.
