WOMAN CHARGED AFTER ENROLLING HIS NEW GIRLFRIEND IN A NEIGHBORHOOD NEWSLETTER SHE WRITES ABOUT HIM Rockford, Illinois — Katie Vanderhof, 30, was charged with harassment and unauthorized computer access after police say she used her ex-boyfriend's old smart home password, which he had never changed, to hijack his kitchen speaker with 24 separate hourly alarms, each one playing "She Will Be Loved" and labeled "REMEMBER WHAT YOU LOST." Investigators say the ex-boyfriend, Marcus Vanderhof, could not silence the alarms for three full days because Katie had also changed the account password, locking him out of his own smart home system entirely. Vanderhof allegedly discovered the alarms had been running undetected since midnight the first night Login records show Katie accessed the account from an iPhone before changing the password entirely She reportedly used her neighborhood newsletter, "Neighborhood Watch by Katie," to formally welcome his new girlfriend to the block by name The issue included the girlfriend's photo alongside a paragraph about "settling into her new role" Police were called after the girlfriend found a stack of the newsletters left on her own porch Neighbors described the newsletter as "usually about lost cats and trash pickup schedules" before this issue. "In 14 years working harassment cases, I've never had a suspect combine smart home alarms with a self-published newsletter," said Rockford PD Detective Simone Vardaro. The kitchen speaker itself was reportedly unavailable for comment, currently reset by the account provider. She set the songs and wrote the press, now she's the one who's facing the mess.
