GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Elementary teacher Megan Ortiz, 36, has been fired after quietly covering a student's $58 overdue lunch balance out of her own pocket so the child would not be turned away at the counter again. Ortiz paid the full amount at the cafeteria office and asked them not to put a note in the boy's file The district flagged it because she "made an unapproved payment outside the parent-billing system" She had added a few extra dollars so he could still get a carton of milk on the days money was tight Her dismissal paperwork cited "circumventing meal-account procedure" and "acting outside her assigned role" A supervisor reportedly told her the gesture "created liability" and "is not the district's responsibility to absorb" The cafeteria staff reportedly applauded when she walked out, and one lunch worker followed her to the parking lot in tears.
