MAN, 83, ARRESTED AFTER DRIVING A MALL SUPPLY CART OUT OF THE BUILDING AND THREE BLOCKS DOWN THE STREET CHICAGO, ILLINOIS — Walter Grennan, 83, was arrested Thursday after commandeering a mall stockroom cart loaded with merchandise and driving it straight out the front entrance, three full blocks down a busy downtown street before security caught up. Mall employees say Grennan had been sitting near the loading dock for several minutes before simply climbing onto the idling cart and pulling away with a full load of freight still stacked in back. He allegedly drove the loaded supply cart out the mall's main entrance doors Witnesses say he made it three full blocks before stopping at a red light Security reportedly had to sprint on foot to catch up to the cart Investigators say the cart was still carrying merchandise valued at over $2,000 Grennan told officers he "just needed some fresh air" and the cart "looked open" One witness said "he had the wheel at ten and two like he was driving a Buick, boxes and all." "I've chased down shoplifters on foot, in cars, one guy on a stolen bike," said mall security director Reggie Combs. "Never had to run three blocks after a stockroom cart driven by an eighty-three-year-old." The cart, merchandise still strapped in place, reportedly declined to comment.
