Officials say she owed $2,940 and submitted exactly $2,940 in pastel-colored play money, sorted by denomination and secured with paper clips. Board members describe a delivery that was clearly rehearsed: She had counted the money three times and included a typed itemization sheet She requested a signed receipt before releasing the shoebox to the office manager She argued the HOA's fee structure was "imaginary" and had "paid in kind" She had highlighted a clause in the bylaws that she claimed did not specify currency She offered a $200 late fee, also in play money, "to show good faith" She had also included two orange properties "as collateral," according to the report She asked the board to confirm her account was now current in writing Residents standing in the lobby reportedly stopped what they were doing to watch her hand over the shoebox with complete composure. "She was calm. She was organized. She was completely serious," said HOA board president Lyle Cranmore, a 20-year veteran of the association. "Fourteen months of dues in a shoebox and she wanted a receipt for it." The shoebox, now in evidence, declined to comment. She said the fees felt made up. She paid them in matching currency.
