PROVIDENCE, RI — Maternity nurse Erin Caldwell, 35, has been terminated after holding a newborn for nearly five hours so a first-time single mother could get her first real sleep since delivery. Caldwell kept the baby at the nurses' station from 1 a.m. to just before 6 a.m., swaying him every time he fussed The hospital flagged it because she "exceeded standard newborn-soothing time without a documented order" She warmed a bottle and changed him twice on her own break so the mother would not be woken Her termination notice cited "extended unauthorized infant care" and "performing duties outside her assignment" A manager reportedly told her the act "created liability" and "is not a service the unit can sustain for every patient" The mother woke up crying with gratitude, and two other nurses on the floor said they would have done the exact same thing.
